What a season our Southeast Colorado Baseball teams had!! Three teams were alive for State Championships going into the final day and one brought home a trophy.
After their suspenseful 2-1 victory over Erie on Friday, the Savages made it to the Class 3A State Finals on Saturday. They needed to defeat Eaton twice to win their first State Championship since 1999. Thanks to the pitching of Kyle Ottoson, it didn't quite work out for Lamar, but the Savages still turned in a 19-7 season and went farther than a lot of people thought they might and they should be saluted for an outstanding run at the State Tournament, which saw them bounce out the top two seeds.
In Class 1A, we saw a re-match between Eads and Granada. The Bobcats had to reach the finals the hard way, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning of their semifinal game with Caliche and scoring two runs with two out for a 4-3 win over the Buffs. The Cats then scored four runs in the top of the 7th inning in the title game on Saturday to forge an 8-8 tie before Adam Watts singled in Taylor Reed with the winning run with two out in the bottom of the 7th to give Eads and head coach Billy Koehler its second consecutive Class 1A State Championship. Another incredible example of why some of the best athletic talent resides in Southeast Colorado....great job!!
Congratulations also goes out to all the track teams from Southeast Colorado that competed at the State Track meets in Pueblo. While no team championships were won, there were a lot of great individual performances....so congratulations to all the athletes whose hard work all season paid off at state!!
Many thanks to all of you who logged on this season to make our first year of bringing you High School Athletics on Network 1 Sports a highly successful one.

What a great finish to the Lamar-Faith Christian game last Saturday on a chilly, blustery day at Butch Butler Field in Greeley. The Savages, already in the loser's bracket after a 9-7 loss to Brush last Friday had to beat Manitou Springs 9-0 earlier Saturday to set up their showdown with Faith. The Eagles were State Champs a year ago and beat Lamar 9-8 in extra innings to end the Savages 2007 season. On Saturday, Lamar overcame defecits of 3-0 and 8-4 and pulled out a 9-8 9-inning win to stay alive in the tournament and send the Eagles home.
Kelby Repp overcame some early struggles and shut down Faith Christian over the final five plus innings, not even allowing a hit in innings five through nine and retiring the Eagles in order in four of those five frames. Repp was rewarded when Tyler Blain singled home Garrett Harper with two out in the bottom of the 9th after Harper had doubled to right field.
So now, the business at hand is staying alive. On Friday, Lamar takes on Erie, last year's State runner-up in a 2:30 p.m. MT elimination game back in Greeley. The Savages must win to get to a 10 a.m. MT game Saturday morning against either Eaton or Brush and win that to reach the State Championship game at 1:00 MT Saturday afternoon. I'll give you my take....Eaton is a very good team and so is Erie and yes the Savages have lost to Brush in this tournament, but after watching those final five innings last Saturday I think the Savages are battle-tested and can play with anyone in the state....defense will be the key....if they keep the errors to a minimum and continue to hit the ball with authority like they have recently, they've got a legitimate shot at taking home the trophy. All Savage games can be heard here on Network 1 Sports!!
In Class 1A the semifinals are Friday in Pueblo. Eads and Idalia square off at 12:30 p.m. MT here on Network 1 Sports with the Lamar-Erie game to follow after that. The Eagles pasted Haxtun 14-1 in the Quarterfinals last Saturday and the defending State Champions are riding a 13-game winning streak coming into this game, which will be played at the Runyon Complex on the Hobbs Field. Also at 12:30 Friday, Granada takes on Caliche in the other semifinal next door on the Andenuccio Field. The Bobcats, who lost to Eads in last year's title game defeated Stratton last Saturday 8-1. Last year, the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals were all played on the same weekend, but with just two rounds this year, Granada pitching ace Daniel Morales stands a better chance of seeing action in both games and giving his squad a crack at unseating Eads as the champ. The 1A Championship Game is Saturday at 11 a.m. and if Lamar is not playing at that time, the game will air here on Network 1 Sports.
This is the final weekend of the High School Sports season for this year and we'd also like to wish best of luck to all the area track teams from Southeast Colorado who are competing this weekend at the state meet at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo. We'd also like to thank everyone who logged on to our broadcasts this season to help make our first year of bringing you the Savages and Southeast Colorado schools a grand success!!

The Lamar Savage Baseball team fresh off their victories over Denver Lutheran and Florence in the Class 3A District 6 Tournament last Saturday at Merchants Park now turn their attention to the state tournament.
Friday at 10 a.m. MT, Lamar takes on Brush in the first game. It's interesting that the Savages are the No. 6 seed while Brush is the No. 3 seed even though Lamar's record (16-5) is better than Brush's (11-10)
I'm told that Brush comes from a very tough conference and has an outstanding pitcher on its staff so the Savages will have to bring their A-Game. We do know that Lamar will play either Erie or Manitou Springs in their next game, the question is when. If the Savages beat Brush they'll play Friday at 3 p.m. MT, if Brush wins they'll play again Saturday at 10 a.m. MT. If Lamar splits its two Friday games they'll play next at 1 p.m. MT Saturday and if the Savages sweep the Friday games, they play next at 3 p.m. MT Saturday....confused?? I am!! Stay tuned to the broadcasts and we'll bring you the exact scenarios as they unfold. We'll bring you all the play-by-play from Greeley beginning Friday morning at 9:45 a.m. MT here on Network 1 Sports. Remember, the Class 3A Tournament is double-elimination.
Meanwhile in Pueblo, three schools from the Arkansas Valley will be in regional action this weekend. In Class 2A, Holly takes on Custer County at 10 a.m. MT Saturday and a win puts them in the state quarterfinals at 3 p.m. MT Saturday against either Rocky Ford or Cotopaxi....the Wildcats would love another shot at Rocky after the Meloneers pasted them 17-3 in last Saturday's District title game.
Defending Class 1A State Champ Eads plays Haxtun in a quarterfinal matchup at 12:30 p.m. MT Saturday while Granada will face Stratton at 3 p.m. MT. If the teams win, they'll advance to the semifinals on May 16th with the State Championship game set for 10 a.m. MT on May 17th. Granada and Eads can only meet again if they face each other in the finals....they'd have to work hard to top that 16-15 thriller won by Eads last Friday in windy Las Animas, that was one of the wildest endings i've ever seen!!
As for the field setup, Holly will play its games on the Hobbs Field while Granada and Eads will play on the Andenuccio Field. Also, if Lamar isn't playing at 10 a.m. on Saturday, we will bring you the Holly-Custer County game here on Network 1 Sports beginning with the pre-game show at 9:45 a.m. MT. Pat McGee will be on the call. The Eads and Granada games will air on KLMR-FM 93.5 with Ron Masterson bringing the play-by-play.
Also, best of luck to all area track teams in their Regional meets this weekend....the State meet will be in Pueblo May 16th and 17th.
